Everton’s away shirt this season is certainly an eye-catcher. The Merseyside club have been keen to show their feminine side over recent times. Last season they had a black shirt with subtle pink pin stripes. This season, they’re going for the full on bright pink shirt to shock the Premier League.
The powers that be at Goodison Park are perhaps marketing the idea of his and hers team kits? Blue for the boys, pink for the girls. It could catch on? Couldn’t it? It would certainly make for a harmonious marriage.
Everton are by no means the first club to have a pink playing strip. In Italy, Serie A football side Palermo sport a lighter pink shirt and are known as ‘La Rosa’ (the pinks). And in rugby union, French team Stade Francais have been known to have a bright pink shirt too.
In the male-dominated world of English football, it’s highly unusual for a club to choose this colour. The only one I can think of in recent years is Oldham Athletic, who wore a bright pink strip in one televised fixture to help to promote a breast cancer charity.
I wonder if the players enjoy wearing it? It’s by no means the worst design of shirt you’re likely to see a sports team wearing, but the shokcing bright pink will make the Everton players stand out away from home this season. There’s no room to hide.
